What is a trademark

Under the Italian Industrial Property Code, a trademark is defined as a sign capable of being represented graphically, through words — including personal names —, designs, letters, numbers, sounds, the shape of the product or its packaging, as well as combinations or shades of colours, provided that such signs are capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one undertaking from those of other undertakings.

Among the main purposes of trademark protection is the building of a bond of trust between consumers and a company's products: this distinctive sign, in fact, allows the public to associate certain qualities with a product or service on the sole basis of the trademark that distinguishes it.
