The Italian Industrial Property Code includes in this category all designs and models that reproduce the external appearance of a product, considered as a whole (even when complex) or limited to some of its components, with regard to elements such as lines, contours, colours, shape, surface configuration, materials used or decoration, provided that the requirements of novelty and individual character are met.

A product means any industrial or handicraft item, while a complex product is defined as a product composed of a plurality of components capable of being replaced.
